Former president Donald Trump (R) and 18 allies have been indicted in Georgia for their alleged role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election.
His allies include former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, Trump administration Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark and Trump attorney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The defendants have been accused of creating a “criminal racketeering” enterprise to overturn the results of the election in the state of Georgia.
Texas Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D) called for tranquility in a time of political confusion while also advocating for the justice system to be allowed to do its job.
“It appears that a massive indictment has come down from the state of Georgia for Mr. Trump and others. The nation needs to remain calm. It is also important for the nation’s judicial system to work its will and to continue to honor the constitution and its privileges.”

“Again, as this matter proceeds in Georgia and all the other matters proceed, as has happened through the ages, the judicial system will work its will.”

One of the charges against Trump includes an alleged scheme in which one of his lawyers would attempt to steal data from a voting machine.
Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez (D) agreed with the indictment and criticized Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) for defending the former president despite the charges.
“Donald Trump interfered with a free and fair election, and today, a Georgia grand jury issued an indictment charging him with multiple felonies. Meanwhile, instead of denouncing Trump, Ted Cruz is focused on weaponizing the government to protect him. Cruz is a coward.”

Sen. Ted Cruz made several claims that the indictment of Trump was political. In his statement, he also lobbed attacks at President Joe Biden (D).
“This prosecutor went in with an objective to indict Donald Trump. Dems don't believe in democracy because they're worried the voters don't want four more years of the disaster that is Joe Biden. They want to abuse the justice system to take that choice away from voters.”

“The timing here is nakedly political. Every time bad news comes out about Hunter or Joe Biden, you can set a stopwatch & within hours, some clown goes & indicts Donald Trump again. Then all of the little lemmings in the media run and say, ‘Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump.’”

Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) stated the importance of the republic and its democracy.
“As a nation, there’s nothing more precious than our republic and our democracy. I trust that justice will be served to the fullest extent of the law, and I look forward to that resolution for our country and democracy.”
