Texas Representative Chip Roy (R) has called out his colleagues on the other side of the aisle as 162 Democrats voted against provisions that “actively target LGBTQ+ service members” which “threaten the recruitment, retention, and readiness of our Armed Forces.” Rep. Roy noted the provisions that the Democrats are hoping to retain while also calling out Representative Colin Allred (D-TX) to vote for the retention of the provisions.

Notable Democrats include Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Veronica Escobar (D-TX), Lois Frankel (D-FL), Darren Soto (D-FL), Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-FL), Al Green (D-TX), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Frederica Wilson (D-FL).

“Breaking: 162 House Democrats (incl[uding] Rep. Colin Allred) stunningly demand… 40 days from the election… the ‘removal’ of #NDAA protections the HouseGOP passed to ensure the U.S. MILITARY does not promote transgender surgeries, drag shows, transgender books, or ‘pride flags,’” said Rep. Roy.

In their rationale, the Democrats wrote:

“These sections of the NDAA were constructed to score political points rather than support and invest in our most important operational advantage: our service members. The U.S. government should not prohibit our service members from accessing medically necessary care … The care transgender service members receive is essential for them to be their authentic selves and focus on their mission. Denying this access to health care would deter transgender people from joining the Armed Forces, damage retention efforts, and hurt our military readiness. As our nation faces recruitment and retention challenges, attacking transgender people—who are more likely to serve in the U.S. military than cisgender people—is a grave mistake.”

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) – Rep. Allred’s opponent this pivotal race – recently called his challenger “radical and extreme” on parental rights.

“The Democrats are coming after the state of Texas,” Senator Cruz told Texas Politics.

During an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, the incumbent senator attempted to distinguish himself and his Democratic challenger, commenting that Rep. Allred’s political positions are “far out of step with the voters of Texas.”

“His record on allowing boys to play in girls’ sports like the rest of his record is radical and extreme,” Senator Cruz explained. “He voted to allow boys in girl’s bathrooms and the girl’s changing room and the girl’s locker rooms without the girls having any rights not to be exposed to naked men in the locker rooms,” Senator Cruz further commented.

Republicans will attempt to maintain their slim majority in the House and take back the majority in the Senate on Nov. 5.
