Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) has announced her candidacy for Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
In a letter to the Democratic Caucus, she made a case for new leadership in what she called a moment of “fierce urgency.”
“In this moment, Americans are demanding a more strategic, aggressive, and energetic fight,” she argued in the letter. “Understanding that fierce urgency, I formally announce my candidacy for Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform – with a focus on standing up for American families, defending the Constitution and the rule of law, and ensuring the government serves the people, not the privileged few.”
Rep. Crockett has quickly emerged as a Democratic firebrand. She has engaged in a rivalry with Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), and criticizing the Trump Administration, which she believes has instituted a democratic crisis.
“Our country is in an existential crisis driven by an out-of-control Executive with a flagrant disregard for our Constitution, our way of governance, and our very way of life as citizens of a democratic republic,” she wrote. “The magnitude of these unprecedented times warrants a resistance and tactics never before seen.”
She laid out a series of commitments, including defending the Constitution, elevating the voices of everyday Americans, and modernizing the committee’s operations. She further pledged to collaborate closely with Democratic leadership, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D), and to better align the committee’s work with the concerns of constituents nationwide.
She concluded her letter by emphasizing unity as the key to restoring public trust. “The House Oversight Committee can be a powerful tool for accountability, transparency, and ultimately, for winning back the trust of the American people. But it will only be as strong as the unity and shared purpose we bring to it,” she wrote.
