The Trump administration is intensifying its stance on attacks against law enforcement, declaring a “zero tolerance” policy after a police officer was shot near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Texas.
The shooting occurred in Alvarado, a suburb of Fort Worth, near the Prairieland Detention Facility. According to authorities, an officer with the Alvarado Police Department was responding to a report of a suspicious person. When the officer attempted to make contact, gunfire erupted, and the officer was struck in the neck.
The officer was airlifted to a Fort Worth hospital and has since been released
Federal officials quickly linked the attack to a broader pattern of violence and threats targeting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) facilities.
“We are closely monitoring the attacks on DHS detention facilities in Prairieland, TX, and Portland, OR, and are coordinating with the [U.S. Attorney offices] and our law enforcement partners,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement posted to X.
“The Department [of Justice] has zero tolerance for assaults on federal officers or property and will bring the full weight of the law against those responsible,” Blanche added.
The shooting in Alvarado is one of several incidents drawing attention to security concerns around federal immigration sites, particularly as opposition to immigration enforcement policies continues in some parts of the country.
Federal and local authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was directly connected to the nearby detention center. However, the timing and proximity have prompted increased security measures and a federal review.
The incident comes amid heightened political debate over immigration and federal law enforcement, with the Trump administration positioning itself as an aggressive defender of border control and police safety.
