Texas Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX) is facing criticism for comments he made regarding the current affordability crisis and his plans for the upcoming July 4 holiday weekend.
Earlier this week, MeidasTouch asked Rep. Nehls what the Republican Party's plans are to lower costs for Americans, a point of debate Democrats have continued to highlight and declared as the main focus for the upcoming midterms.
But the congressman, who is not up for re-election this fall, did not provide the answer many may have expected.
“Over the Fourth, I’m going to get me a couple of big lobster tails; I’m going to get me some nice rib-eyes,” Rep. Nehls said. “I’m going to sit in my backyard with my family, my neighbors, and we’re going to be enjoying the Fourth.”
According to a recent poll, 60% of Americans said they are concerned about the cost of living. Rep. Nehls was asked how he thought his holiday plans would come off to this population.
"Maybe the 60% of Americans don't work as hard as I do either,” Rep. Nehls said. “I mean, I don't know.”
These comments come as President Trump’s financial disclosures also sparked public criticism, revealing he earned about $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency sales and other ventures in 2025. Trump told reporters he earned more because the stock market is rising.
“Everybody is profiting,” Trump said.
Trump also claimed the war in Iran is over, the Strait of Hormuz is open and gas prices will soon fall. Last week, the United States carried out strikes against Iran, raising concerns about potential impacts on global energy markets.
Despite rising gas prices and voters concerned about affordability, Rep. Nehls said he thinks Americans understand these increases are only temporary.
"Everybody understands, you're gonna see a little increase in energy prices because of Iran,” Rep. Nehls said. “I mean, come on, people aren't stupid.”
