Congressman Christian Menefee (D) joined the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, local leaders, and advocacy organizations in Houston to demand a full investigation into the fatal shooting of Salgado Araujo by an ICE officer, calling for transparency, accountability, and changes to federal immigration enforcement.
Menefee joins Houston leaders after fatal shooting
Rep. Menefee joined the family of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, Rep. Sylvia Garcia, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Houston community leaders to honor Salgado Araujo, who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an enforcement operation on Tuesday.
During the press conference, Menefee called for a full, transparent investigation into the incident and urged that anyone found responsible be held accountable.
What Menefee is saying
Rep. Christian Menefee: "I want to be clear, somebody being killed by law enforcement is a big deal. No matter the circumstances, no one should take lightly the power to take someone's life in the middle of a street."
During his remarks, Menefee argued that undocumented immigrants are an integral part of Houston's communities, describing them as neighbors, family members, and business owners who deserve to be treated with dignity.
Rep. Menefee continued: "We are a city of undocumented immigrants. They are our neighbors. They are our family. They are business owners, and they deserve to be treated with humanity and dignity."
Oversight Committee warning
As a member of the House Oversight Committee, Menefee pledged to continue scrutiny of ICE if Democrats regain control of the House.
Rep. Menefee: "When Democrats take back the House, ICE, you better buckle up, because we will be investigating you day after day after day until this lawlessness and this militarism stop."
He concluded by stating that Salgado Araujo should still be alive and reiterated his opposition to ICE operations in Houston.
