Southwestern Public Service Company, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, has filed a comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Plan with Texas regulators that outlines new technologies, infrastructure upgrades, and operational strategies aimed at reducing wildfire risk and protecting communities across its Texas service area.
As wildfire risks continue to evolve across Texas, Southwestern Public Service Company (SPS), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, is proposing a sweeping plan designed to strengthen grid resilience and reduce the likelihood of utility-related wildfires.
The company has filed its Wildfire Mitigation Plan with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), detailing a multi-layered strategy that combines advanced technology, infrastructure improvements, and enhanced emergency coordination to protect customers and communities better.
"Our purpose is straightforward: Reduce wildfire risk, protect our communities, and provide the safe, reliable service our customers depend on every day," said Brad Baldridge, interim president of Xcel Energy Texas.
The proposal builds on Xcel Energy's existing wildfire prevention efforts by introducing additional tools that enhance situational awareness and enable crews to respond more quickly as wildfire conditions develop.
Among the initiatives included in the plan are AI-powered wildfire detection cameras, localized weather stations, drone inspections, enhanced vegetation management, upgraded transmission and distribution equipment, and expanded use of fault detection technology.
The company also plans to continue modernizing its electric system with new devices capable of Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS), which can automatically respond to electrical faults during periods of elevated wildfire danger.
Wes Reeves, Xcel Energy's senior community engagement manager for wildfire mitigation, said the collaboration with local fire departments remains a key part of the company's strategy.
"I hear their feedback often, and tools such as wildfire detection cameras provide them with critical situational awareness," said Reeves. "We're thankful for our partners as we work together to reduce the risk of fires."
The Wildfire Mitigation Plan is currently under review by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, which is expected to issue a decision within 180 days after determining the application is complete.
