Senator Ted Cruz (R) is raising alarms over what he describes as a decades-long effort by the Muslim Brotherhood to build influence inside American institutions, using a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing to argue the issue has remained "hidden in plain sight."
As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action, and Federal Rights, Cruz led a hearing examining what witnesses characterize as the Muslim Brotherhood's reach into nonprofits, universities, taxpayer-funded programs, political organizations, and the American legal system.
Cruz argued the threat extends far beyond foreign terrorism, claiming the organization has spent decades establishing domestic influence networks.
"History has taught Americans the danger of dismissing determined jihadist movements because their ambitions seem too extreme to be real," said Cruz.
Throughout the hearing, Cruz pointed to evidence presented during the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing trial, which included wiretaps, internal documents, organizational charts, and meeting transcripts that prosecutors said exposed the Brotherhood's American infrastructure.
He specifically referenced organizations prosecutors alleged were part of a broader network, including the Islamic Society of North America, the North American Islamic Trust, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Cruz also connected the issue to pro-Palestinian demonstrations that erupted on college campuses following the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, arguing those protests reflected years of organized influence rather than spontaneous activism.
The Texas senator criticized Democratic members of the subcommittee for not participating in the hearing, saying their absence illustrated the success of the very movement he was warned about.
"My promise to the American people is to hold accountable those who finance and support terrorism on American soil, no matter how many tax exemptions, charitable registrations, or civil rights letterheads they hide behind," said Cruz.
The hearing is part of a broader Republican effort to increase congressional scrutiny of organizations they believe have ties to extremist movements operating within the United States.
