Democratic U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett is facing criticism after honoring musicians Chris Brown and Usher with a congressional record recognition during a concert in Arlington, Texas, over the weekend.

Rep. Crockett appeared alongside Texas state Rep. Venton Jones (D) and said she was there to honor the performers.

"We are experiencing Black joy at the highest level," Crockett said during the event. "And I wanted to make sure we document that at the congressional level. So let's give it up again for Chris Brown."

A congressional record recognition is a ceremonial honor that allows a member of Congress to place a person, event, or achievement into the official Congressional Record.

The recognition drew criticism because Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 to felony assault against his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. Brown also pleaded guilty in July to an affray charge stemming from a 2023 incident at a London nightclub.

Some supporters of her appearance said the event gave her a chance to reach voters and boost turnout in lower-level Democratic races.

The appearance also comes amid questions about Crockett's role in the 2026 Texas Senate race. She lost the Democratic primary to state Rep. James Talarico, who is now the party's nominee against Republican Ken Paxton.

Crockett has said she plans to campaign for down-ballot Democratic candidates, while some Texas Democrats have publicly urged her to campaign alongside Talarico.
