Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D) is demanding answers from Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), and Education Commissioner Mike Morath (R) over reported incidents involving police use of force against students in Texas public schools.
Rep. Crockett said she is concerned about the growing presence of police in schools and the potential for students to become involved with the criminal justice system over behavior that could otherwise be addressed through school discipline.
"Texas is failing our kids. Our children deserve to go to school in an environment that fosters learning and growth, not environments where ordinary student behavior can end with a child in handcuffs, hogtied, shocked with a Taser, or pepper-sprayed," wrote Crockett.
Our kids are being hogtied, handcuffed, and tased in our schools.
Keeping them safe should be the bare minimum.
I am urging our Texas leaders to exercise immediate oversight and ensure accountability for these horrific reported actions. This is unacceptable, and it has to stop.

The investigation also found that many incidents began with student behavior such as dress-code violations, vaping, or schoolyard fights, while Texas law does not clearly define what constitutes "routine student discipline" for purposes of limiting police involvement.
"The number of 'incidents' is alarming. Our kiddos should not be treated like criminals," said Crockett. "They are the future of this country, and we owe it to them to protect them from cruel and abusive behavior. I am urging Texas leaders to exercise immediate oversight and ensure accountability for these horrific reported actions."
Crockett concluded by saying, "This is unacceptable, and it has to stop."
