Governor Greg Abbott (R) highlighted Texas' energy industry, workforce, and economic growth during a fireside chat at the University Lands Energy Forum in Odessa, pointing to the oil and gas sector's role in supporting jobs and strengthening the state's economy.

"Texas is more than a production hub, we are a stabilizing force for the nation," said Gov. Abbott. "Our growing, skilled workforce and innovative training programs make the Lone Star State the blueprint for economic success."

Abbott was joined by Stuart Stedman, chair of the University Lands Advisory Board and a University of Texas System regent, and Rad Weaver, vice chairman of the UT System Board of Regents.

During the discussion, Abbott highlighted job creation, business expansion, Texas' role in global energy markets, and the state's growing workforce. He also addressed education, transportation, and border security.

"The men and women of the Texas oil and gas industry are vital to our thriving economy as we build a stronger, more prosperous future for generations to come," said Gov. Abbott.

The governor's office said Texas is the world's eighth-largest economy and home to headquarters of 57 Fortune 500 companies. The state's oil and gas industry directly and indirectly supports approximately 1.4 million jobs, according to figures published by the governor's office.

Texas also leads the nation in crude oil and natural gas production and produces more electricity than any other state. Its energy sector spans oil and gas, wind generation, utility-scale solar and battery storage, alongside emerging technologies such as hydrogen, geothermal, and small modular nuclear power.

The University Lands Energy Forum brings together energy-sector and university leaders to discuss the industry's economic role and future development. Abbott's remarks emphasized the connection between Texas' energy production, workforce training, and broader economic growth.
