Cameron County has been awarded $9.18 million in federal funding to develop a commercial truck parking facility near the Los Indios Port of Entry, adding approximately 305 dedicated spaces to support cross-border trade and freight transportation.
What will the funding pay for?
U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D) announced the $9,182,608 award for Cameron County on October 14. The project will reconstruct approximately 0.35 miles of Rio Grande Avenue to provide access to the new public commercial motor vehicle parking facility near the Los Indios Port of Entry.
Plans include about 305 trucking parking spaces, roadway improvements, driver amenities, enhanced security features, an automated weight station, and intelligent parking-system technology.
The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation's Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects program, known as INFRA. The Los Indios project is one of 14 truck parking expansion projects selected for fiscal year 2026 funding across 12 states.
Why does the project matter for South Texas?
Gonzalez said the investment will help truck drivers operate more efficiently as cross-border trade and demand for transportation infrastructure increase.
Rep. Vicente Gonzalez: "South Texas is an international hub for trade and commerce, and our infrastructure must keep pace with heightened demand."
He added that the funding will help commercial truckers maintain efficient operations while transporting goods and materials throughout the region and the country.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. said the project will provide truck drivers with a dedicated, secure place to rest before continuing their routes, supporting transportation safety and supply-chain operations.
The award is part of a broader federal investment in truck parking infrastructure through the INFRA program. The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law allocated $7.25 billion to the program over five years to support major freight and highway projects.
