Texas Governor Greg Abbott's (R) campaign is accusing Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa (D) of hypocrisy over her criticism of billionaire influence and data center development, pointing to campaign contributions from wealthy donors, political action committees, and progressive organizations.
In a statement, Texans for Greg Abbott Communications Director Catherine Frazier argued that Hinojosa's campaign relies on opposition to billionaire and data center interests while accepting support from wealthy Democratic donors and groups aligned with progressive causes.
"Gina Hinojosa won't stop lying to Texans. She has built her campaign on the message that she is fighting billionaire and data center interests in Texas - yet, Hinojosa herself is being funded by an OpenAI founder, millionaire and billionaire elites, and the progressive groups they bankroll, who share her crazy out-of-touch values," said Frazier.
The Abbott campaign cited Hinojosa's October 25, 2026, campaign financing filing, highlighting contributions from Jessica Livingston, an early OpenAI investor; Rory Gates, the son of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates; and Barry Munger, the son of the late Berkshire Hathaway executive Charlie Munger. It also named David Gochman, Liz Simons, and Beaumont attorney Cade Bernsen.
The campaign further pointed to contributions from the National Education Association Fund, the Texas State Teachers Association PAC, Way to Lead Texas and the Texas Organizing Project PAC. It characterized those organizations as progressive political groups and highlighted alleged connections between some of them and George Soros.
Texas Majority PAC, which the Abbott campaign identified as a major vehicle for Soros-backed political spending in Texas, was another focus. The camapaign said the group and the Texas Democratic Party support Blue Texas, a statewide effort to elect Democrats, and that Texas Majority PAC was among the groups involved in forming the Texas Together coalition. Hinojosa's campaign has previously said it partnered with Texas Together and local county parties for campaign events.
The Abbott campaign also criticized Hinojosa for attending fundraisers in New York City in September 2026 and November 2025, portraying the events as evidence of her ties to wealthy Democratic donors.
