Texas has a new energy regulator. Jon Rosenthal (D) defeated Bo French (R) Tuesday night to become Texas' new railroad commissioner, set to oversee the state's massive oil and natural gas industries.

Rosenthal received 52.6% of the vote, compared with French's 45.4%.

The race put Texas energy policy in the spotlight as the state faces rising electricity demand, expanding oil and gas development, and growing debate over the infrastructure needed to power its economy.

Despite its name, the Railroad Commission does not regulate trains. It oversees oil and gas production, drilling permits, pipeline safety, and other aspects of the state's energy industry.

During the campaign, Rosenthal emphasized grid reliability, energy bills and consumer protection, regulatory enforcement, and data center policies to address infrastructure strain, while French focused on prioritizing oil and gas to drive the state's economy, cutting regulations imposed by the Texas Railroad Commission, eliminating taxpayer-funded DEI contracts and programs, screening for foreign ownership and influence, and promoting anti-abortion policies.

The winner will join two other commissioners in overseeing an industry that remains central to Texas' economy and national energy production. Decisions made by the commission can affect producers, landowners, pipeline operators, and communities across the state.

The election is over, but the debate over how Texas regulates its energy industry is far from finished.
