After a shocking Democratic victory for James Talarico (D-TX) in the U.S. Senate this week, Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) is extending a helping hand to the incoming senator.
Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton (R-TX) for the seat held by Sen. Cornyn, who originally planned to run for reelection. In May 2026, President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton over Sen. Cornyn, and Paxton went on to defeat Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff.
“The voters have spoken, and I want to extend my congratulations to James Talarico on his election to the U.S. Senate,” Sen. Cornyn said on X. “I look forward to meeting him and offering my assistance with his transition as he prepares to serve Texans in the U.S. Senate.”
Though Sen. Cornyn did not endorse Talarico, he has sided with him on some issues, like denouncing racist comments from Republican nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner Bo French (R-TX).
Sen. Cornyn also spoke on the widespread defeat for Republican candidates after the election. 14 House Republicans lost their seats, and four Senate Republicans were unseated by Democratic challengers.
In an opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal, Sen. Cornyn said this loss was due to the party forgetting “the basic rules of coalition politics.”
“Die-hard Never Trumpers will rush to eulogize the MAGA movement,” Sen. Cornyn said. “Some populists will shop a stab-in-the-back narrative that blames the traditional conservatives they themselves chased away. But both sides miss the point.”
Sen. Cornyn added, “This week’s beat-down wasn’t only foreseeable, it was foreseen—because our party forgot four basic rules of coalition politics.”
