Texas Representative Sheila Jackson Lee recently released a statement sharing the news of her pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
The congresswoman emphasized the importance of her “faith in God, love for humanity” and “commitment to public service.”
“As a member of Congress, I’ve been honored to be one of the leaders in the fight for justice and equality for all; especially the disadvantaged and the dispossessed,” said Rep. Lee. “Today, my fight is more personal, but I will approach it with the same faith and the same courage.”
Pancreatic cancer affects tens of thousands of people each year. However, Rep. Lee stated that her faith in God would strengthen her.
The representative has been in Congress for three decades and assured her 18th Congressional District constituents that she would continue to serve them.
“As I pursue my treatments, it is likely that I will be occasionally absent from Congress, but rest assured my office will continue to deliver the vital constituent services that you deserve and expect,” said Rep. Jackson Lee.
“I am committed to working with our Congressional Leadership including Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Speaker of House to serve this nation and be present for votes on legislation that is critical for the prosperity and security of the American people,” the congresswoman continued. “By God’s grace, I will be back at full strength soon.”
Rep. Jackson Lee concluded her statement by expressing her desire for readers to keep her family in their prayers as she goes through treatment and recovery.
“Please keep me and my family in your prayers as you have always done. Know that you will remain in mine. As always, God bless you and God bless the United States of America,” said Rep. Jackson Lee.
Several fellow Congress members and constituents have shared their support for the long-term representative as they pray for her recovery.
