WASHINGTON—The controversial Kids Online Security Act (KOSA) continues to enjoy bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress, but now the legislative measure is receiving a lot of scrutiny from Republican lawmakers because the bill gives more enforcement authority to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
Earlier this year, it appeared as if the bill sponsored by Rep. Gus Bilirakis and Senator Marsha Blackburn was dead on arrival because of its apparent big government overreach.
Now, more lawmakers are expressing their concerns over the KOSA bill’s enforcement aspect.
Rep. Michael Cloud (R-Tx) warned about the current government’s power.
“Anytime the govt gains power it is always to for a different purpose. We are certainly in a season where the government has too much power and we need to be doing everything we can to return power to the people, said Rep. Cloud in an interview with Texas Politics.
Rep. Cloud’s fellow Texan, Rep. Chip Roy (R), also expressed to Texas Politics his concerns and the concerns of other lawmakers about the FTC’s involvement in the bill.
“Its hung up, a lot of good stuff in there what its trying to do, but there is issue whose enforceing it,” said Rep. Roy.
Florida Congressman Byron Donalds (R) also took issue with the KOSA bill giving the FTC the job of enforcement, saying that he had a very real concern about the measure.
“Children need to be safeguarded, but if the FTC is the one doing that, that ‘s where I got real concerns. I don’t trust any of these agencies to do their core missions,” stated Rep. Donalds.
The KOSA Act could be voted on in the Senate as early as this week.
