President Donald Trump (R) scored a huge victory across the country. Not only did he win all 7 swing states, but historically blue states saw significant shifts towards his ticket. Running an aggressive campaign on addressing issues with the southern border, President Trump beat Vice President Kamala Harris (D) in 12 of 14 Texas border counties. In assessing why the president received this much support, Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) argues that voters "rejected open borders."
In an interview with Fox News, Rep. Roy explained that voters rejected identity politics to vote for the safety of the country. In doing so, he argues, it showed that President Trump had expanded his support across party lines.

"This is President Trump delivering for the American people. This is President Trump building a coalition - broad coalition - with people like RFK, Jr., Tulsi Gabbard, and other great folks across the spectrum, but importantly reaching out to demographics," Rep. Roy explained.
For Rep. Roy, the election was more than being about identity politics. "It was about standing up for the things that people on the border in Texas wanted to see," he shared.
In looking at the numbers, Maverick County, which has Eagle Pass in it, is 95% Hispanic, and 59% of the vote went to President Trump. Earlier this year, Eagle Pass was at the center of controversy after Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) seized Shelby Park in Eagle Pass to curb illegal immigration in the state.
Because of the support that President Trump received in Maverick County, Rep. Roy believes that it should be a wake-up call to politicians believing that Hispanic voters are "monolithic."
"People think Hispanics are monolithically Democrat. They are not... they want their streets to be safe, they don't like cartels, they don't like fentanyl, they don't like people coming across the border and invading their homes, and that's why Donald Trump won resoundingly," he assessed.
