Democratic leadership is scurrying to figure out what happened in the 2024 presidential election. President Donald Trump (R) won the presidency, Republicans took control of the senate, and over the weekend, Republicans also clinched congress. Progressive Caucus Whip and Texas Rep. Greg Casar (D) has offered his assessment, blasting "the powers that be" over congressional losses.
All 435 house seats were up for reelection last Tuesday, and when the final votes were counted, Republicans took control of congress with 2019 seats. Democrats have 2010 seats.
In response to the election results, Democrats have directed blame at President Joe Biden (D), Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D), and even the lack of messaging for why Democrats lost in the November election. However, Rep. Casar is directing the blame back to President Trump, assuring that the president lied to the American people.
Outside of the capitol, and joined by members of the progressive caucus, Rep. Casar blasted President Trump and "the powers that be," noting that Democrats will bounce back from the loss.
"Donald Trump did kind of the oldest trick in the right-wing playbook," he assessed, adding that President Trump "said that everybody's problems are caused by a vulnerable group of people that he blamed over and over and over again, but these members in their campaigns stuck to their progressive values and also spoke directly to working people to build an electoral majority."
"They said it's not immigrants that are driving up housing prices, it's Wall Street; it's not trans people that are causing your worsening health care, it's big Pharma," Rep. Casar expressed.
"These are the members that are authentic, that are proud, that are from their communities, that have promised to deliver to their communities and are unafraid of standing up to the real powers that be," the Texas Democrat further expressed.
