Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced the opening of the Constellation Pin Oak peaking power plant, a new energy facility designed to strengthen grid reliability and meet rising electricity demand across the state.
The plant adds 460 megawatts of dispatchable power to the Texas grid, providing critical backup electricity during periods of peak demand. Gov. Abbott emphasized the state's leadership in energy production and the importance of continued infrastructure investment.
"Texas is by far the largest electrical power generator in America," said Gov. Abbott. "Today, we expand on that leadership by opening a new peaking power plant that ensures the region has extra power when Texans need it most."
Developed by Constellation Energy in partnership with Calpine, the facility marks a key milestone as the first project completed under the Texas Energy Fund. The plant is designed to rapidly supply electricity during high-demand periods, helping stabilize the grid and support both residential and commercial users.
Andrew Novotny, President and CEO of Calpine and a senior executive at Constellation, said the project fulfills a commitment made in 2023 to expand reliable power capacity in Texas.
"We're proud to help strengthen grid reliability while meeting the state's growing energy needs," he said.
Abbott also highlighted broader progress in grid expansion, noting that Texas has added more than 61,000 megawatts of new power capacity over the past five years.
Local and state officials, including Angelia Orr and Fairfield Mayor Bobby Nichols, joined the announcement alongside energy regulators and company executives.
The Pin Oak plant represents a targeted effort to improve grid resilience in a fast-growing state, reinforcing Texas's strategy of expanding flexible, on-demand power sources to manage peak electricity demand.
