U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro (D), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, is leading a group of 30 House Democrats in urging the U.S. Department of State to provide greater transparency regarding Israel's nuclear capabilities.
In a formal letter sent amid the ongoing regional conflict involving Israel and Iran, lawmakers argued that the longstanding U.S. policy of ambiguity on Israel's nuclear program undermines Congress's ability to exercise oversight and develop a coherent nonproliferation policy.
"We are in the fullest sense, fighting this war side by side with a country whose potential nuclear weapons program the United States government officially refuses to acknowledge," the lawmakers wrote.
They emphasized that U.S. service members remain deployed across the region and that Congress has a constitutional responsibility to understand the nuclear balance and risks of escalation.
The letter calls on the State Department to apply consistent standards across the Middle East, arguing that U.S. nonproliferation policy cannot function effectively while maintaining "official silence: about one of the region's most consequential actors.
"We ask that you hold Israel to the same standard of transparency that the United States expects from any other country that may be pursuing or retaining nuclear weapons capability," the lawmakers concluded.
The signatories include a broad coalition of Democratic members, such as Greg Casar (D), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), among others.
The request reflects growing scrutiny within Congress over U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, particularly as it relates to nuclear weapons, regional security, and the risks of broader conflict.
The letter marks a notable push by House Democrats to revisit longstanding U.S. policy on Israel's nuclear posture. As tensions persist in the region, the debate over transparency and consistency in nonproliferation policy is likely to remain a focal point in congressional oversight.
