Representative Chip Roy (R) has formally requested a briefing from Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins regarding the federal government's response to the growing threat posed by the New World Screwworm, a pest that has continued spreading northward through Central America and Mexico.
In a letter to Sec. Rollins, Rep. Roy, emphasized concerns about the potential impact of a New World Screwworm outbreak on Texas' economy, livestock industry, and public health.
"I write today to request an official briefing regarding the New World Screwworm epidemic that threatens Texas' multi-billion-dollar ranching industry, substantial hunting industry, and the human health of all Americans," wrote Roy.
The New World Screwworm outbreak has raised concerns among agricultural stakeholders as the pest continues moving closer to the United States. According to Roy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that an outbreak in Texas could cost nearly $2 billion in economic damage, threatening ranchers and broader food security interests.
"The New World Screwworm threat has loomed over Texas for over a year now, and while I appreciate the willingness from the administration to address this issue, some in Texas fear the response has left Texas unsure if we are going to be able to stop it should the Screwworm cross the border," wrote Roy.
Roy requested that the Department of Agriculture provide Members of Congress with an official briefing detailing the agency's coordination with state and local partners and outlining progress made under the USDA's June 2025 action plan."
The congressman also posed several specific questions for the department, including the location of the nearest confirmed New World Screwworm case, sterile fly production and dispersal efforts at Moore Air Base, the status of audits of Mexico's animal health control, available treatment capabilities, and the development of improved trapping and detection methods.
Roy's request underscores ongoing concerns about the New World Screwworm's advance toward the U.S. border and the potential consequences for Texas agriculture. The proposed briefing would provide lawmakers with updated information on USDA mitigation efforts and preparedness measures aimed at preventing an outbreak.
