The President joked Monday that he will appoint Sen. Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court because "every Senator wants him gone."

"He's the only one I can think of that's going to get 100 votes!" said Trump in the Oval Office.

The Senator has received bipartisan criticism in the Senate over his 13-year career.

Critics argue that Cruz is repeatedly on the more controversial side of Senate debates. As a Trump-backed Republican Senator, he supported the investigation into the 2020 election and claims that it was "rigged."

“I like Ted Cruz more than most of my other colleagues like Ted Cruz. And I hate Ted Cruz," former Sen. Al Franken wrote.

Cruz's political stance on multiple issues has also garnered sharp criticism. He has received backlash from both parties for his response to mass shootings in Texas and disaster relief funding.

In 2021 during Winter Storm Uri, Cruz left for a family vacation in Cancun, Mexico, while millions of Texans were left without power. Ever since then, he has drawn criticism for his response to disasters in the state.

During his time in the Senate, Cruz has been a repeat critic of the Supreme Court, including recently when he called the Supreme Court's decision upholding birthright citizenship a "travesty." However, when Trump discussed Supreme Court vacancies with the Senator, Cruz declined, maintaining that his priorities lie in policy fights.

“In the first Trump term, the president spoke to me seriously about all three vacancies, and three times I said no, because I don’t want to be out of the arena of the political battle,” said Cruz in a Wall Street Journal Opinion Live interview in 2016.

Now, the President is teasing the idea of Cruz in the Supreme Court eight years later.

President Trump joked, "All Republicans and Democrats would vote for him because they want to get him the hell out of the Senate!"
