Congressman Christian Menefee (D) criticized ICE and the Department of Homeland Security following reports that the agents involved in the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo were not equipped with body-worn cameras, calling for greater transparency and accountability.

What prompted Menefee's statement?

Rep. Menefee released a statement after reports indicated that the ICE agents involved in the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo were not wearing body cameras during the enforcement operation.

Menefee also criticized the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for what he described as an attempt to blame Democrats for the lack of body-worn cameras.

What did Menefee say?

Menefee argued that ICE has received significant federal funding and that the agency chose not to prioritize equipping all officers with body cameras.

Rep. Christian Menefee: "If these ICE agents didn't have cameras, it's because Trump and Republicans didn't want them to have them."

He also noted that Ice is the nation's highest-funded law enforcement agency and pointed to funding for new agents, detention centers, signing bonuses, and enforcement operations.

Rep. Menefee continued: "They found money for detention centers, for signing bonuses, for a hiring spree, and for enhanced enforcement operations. But they refused to spend that money on body-worn cameras for all their officers."

Menefee also claimed Democrats pushed to make body cameras a condition for DHS funding while criticizing Republican-backed efforts to reduce funding for the program.

What is Menefee calling for?

Menefee called on ICE to:

  • Release the names of every ICE officer involved in the incident.
  • Clarify whether any officers on the scene were equipped with body cameras.
  • Identify which ICE officers conducting enforcement operations in Houston were wearing cameras.
  • Disclose who authorized the enforcement operation.

The congressman says ICE should provide full transparency following the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. He argues that the agency has the resources necessary to equip officers with body-worn cameras.
