Following fatal shootings in Maine and Texas in the past week, officials ordered a temporary halt on most illegal immigration enforcement vehicle stops nationwide. A day later, Trump said it is "not happening on [his] watch."
Why was ICE called to a halt initially?
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Me.) asked DHS Sec. Markwayne Mullin to pause ICE traffic stops until agents receive further training, following fatal shootings in Maine and Texas in a span of six days.
What are people saying?
- President Trump: "The Radical Left Dumocrats would like to see this done, but it won’t happen on my watch. I.C.E., be judicious, fair and smart, and go back and do your very important job."
- Rep. Collins: "I spoke with DHS Secretary Mullin last night and urged him to cease all non-urgent vehicle stops in the wake of yesterday’s deadly Biddeford shooting. I am encouraged that the Department has agreed to do so."
Susan Collins, a fellow Republican, called for the ICE halt Monday, urging Sec. Mullin to cease all non-urgent vehicle stops, following Monday's deadly shooting in Biddeford, Me.
"I am encouraged that the Department has agreed to do so," said Collins Monday.
Just six days earlier on July 7, an ICE officer fatally shot a Mexican national in Houston, TX.
Although Collins and the DHS called for a temporary pause on ICE traffic stops, Trump is pushing back.
"The Radical Left Dumocrats would like to see this done, but it won’t happen on my watch. I.C.E., be judicious, fair and smart, and go back and do your very important job," the President wrote on Truth Social.
It is unclear whether or not the pause is going to remain in effect, however, the DHS reposted Trump's Truth Social post on X.
