NextEra Energy has finalized agreements with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Government of Japan to fund up to 10 gigawatts of natural gas-powered generation in Texas and Pennsylvania, with the initial $3.3 billion investment supporting early development and equipment purchases.
NextEra Finalizes Funding Agreements
NextEra Energy announced it has executed definitive agreements with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Government of Japan to fund the development and operation of up to 10 gigawatts of natural gas-powered generation in Texas and Pennsylvania.
The agreements release the first tranche of funding for the projects, which will support early development activities, including down payments for long-lead equipment such as turbines and the selection of engineering, procurement, and construction contractors.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the initial $3.3 billion investment will begin construction of facilities needed to deliver up to 10 gigawatts of natural gas power while lowering energy costs and creating thousands of jobs.
Texas Project to Support Energy Demand
The Texas project is part of NextEra's broader strategy of pairing large electricity users with dedicated power generation.
NextEra Chairman, President and CEO John Ketchum said the company's "hub strategy" was developed to capitalize on opportunities created by rapidly growing electricity demand, particularly from digital infrastructure.

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R) praised the Texas investment, saying the new natural gas generation will support manufacturing, economic growth, and the state's position as a leader in energy production.

What Comes Next
NextEra said the initial power generation from the projects could come online as early as the end of 2028, with the projects expected to be completed by 2032. The company says development will continue in coordination with federal, state, and local officials.
