Texas Senate Democrat nominee James Talarico said he opposes SB 14, which banned transgender surgeries for minors, saying he "trusts parents" to make decisions for their trans kids.
Why does this matter?
Texas and federal lawmakers have passed recent legislation affecting transgender people. Talarico has expressed his opposition to these policies, such as SB 14 and SB 12, the Texas book ban in public schools.
What is Talarico saying?
"I would say the most dangerous is SB 14, which would deny many times life-saving healthcare from our trans youth in Texas. The reason that I oppose that bill is because I trust parents and doctors to make decisions for kids and not politicians in Austin," Talarico said at a pride event.
The Senate nominee criticized Texas legislation he deems as "harmful" policies for transgender people in the state.
Recently, the Supreme Court ruled to let the states decide if they want to bar boys from girls' sports. Texas is one state that enforces the ban.
Talarico repeatedly criticizes Texas Republicans during his campaign, saying they are proponents of "parental rights" until it comes to "protecting" trans youth.
