Gov. Greg Abbott swore in Robert S. Howden as the 116th Secretary of State of Texas Monday, following Jane Nelson's resignation from the position.
Who is Robert Howden?
Howden, a graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, is a Senior Advisor and the Director of Legislative Affairs for the Office of the Governor. He has served with distinction under four Republican governors throughout his career.

Prior to his position as Senior Advisor and Director, Howden was an independent legislative and public affairs consultant. He had served under past Governors and is currently a member of the University of Texas Chancellor's Council Executive Committee.
Gov. Abbott announced the appointment of Howden Friday, the day former Secretary Nelson's term ended, following her resignation.

The Secretary of State serves as Chief Election Officer for Texas, ensuring that election laws are followed throughout the state. The Office also provides a repository for official business and commercial records to be filed.
Additionally, the Secretary makes government rules and regulations and commission notaries public, serving as keeper of the state seal and attesting the Governor's signature on official documents.
Beyond affairs within the state, Howden will serve as Senior Advisor and Liaison to the Governor for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs. He will also serve as Chief International Protocol Officer for Texas.
