Texas voters have chosen the state's next leadership team in a historic gubernatorial race. Gina Hinojosa (D) defeated Incumbent Greg Abbott (R) in the governor's race Tuesday night, while Vikki Goodwin (D) secured a victory against incumbent Dan Patrick (R) in the contest for lieutenant governor.
In the governor's race, Hinojosa received 52.8% of the vote, compared with Abbott's 45.8% of the vote. The contest centered on major issues including border security, public education, property taxes, energy, and the state's relationship with the federal government.
Goodwin defeated Patrick with 51.9% of the vote, compared with 45.5%. The race drew particular attention because the lieutenant governor presides over the Texas Senate and wields significant influence over its legislative agenda, committee assignments, and budget process.
The governor's victory allows Hinojosa to shape the state's executive agenda, while the lieutenant governor's win could influence which policies advance through the Legislature.
"Tonight, I make a solemn promise to every single Texan. Whether you voted for me or Governor Abbott, or felt so betrayed by a broken politics that you did not vote at all," said Hinojosa. "The trust you have placed in me tonight is not a blank check. It is a sacred responsibility. And I intend to earn it every single day."
The result marks the first time since 1995 that a democrat was the governor in Texas.
With both statewide races decided, Texas is preparing for a continued chapter in its leadership. The next test will come when the state's leaders turn campaign promises into policy.

Finally some relief – a reason to look ahead to the future
